Just a quick thank you to Lifetime for providing a road to an open dialogue with my 15 year old son about sex and pregnancy. I dvr'd The Pregnancy Pact, a Lifetime Original Movie, to watch originally by myself. As fate would have it, virtually nothing else was on the other night when I turned it on. As a result, my teenage son and husband decided to watch the movie with me.
Half way through this film and my son was admittedly more frightened by the premise than he was by the popular scary movie "Paranormal Activity". I don't think he had ever pondered the possibility of a teenage girl wanting to get pregnant. The devious nature of these girls seeking out love and attention by doing something so permanent completely freaked him out. I was thrilled by this accidental development that came from viewing this show. He actually wanted / needed to talk about this show when it was over. Perfect!
Here's the official description for you: "Inspired by a true story, the film explores the costs of teen pregnancy with a story of a fictional "pregnancy pact" set against the backdrop of actual news reports about teen pregnancy from June 2008. Sidney Bloom (Thora Birch), an on-line magazine journalist, returns to her hometown to investigate the sudden spike in teenage pregnancies at her old high school. Almost immediately, she comes up against Lorraine Dougan (Nancy Travis), the head of the local conservative values group and mother of Sara, a newly pregnant 15-year-old.
Meanwhile, the school nurse (Camryn Manheim) tries to convince the school to provide contraception to students to address the pregnancy epidemic but is met with great opposition from the school and community. As the number of pregnant girls climbs to 18, a media firestorm erupts when Time Magazine reports that the rise in the number of pregnancies at the school is the result of a "pregnancy pact." As the mystery unfolds about whether or not "the pact" is real, Sidney soon realizes that all of the attention is disguising the much larger issues that are at the core of the story."
Now don't worry, I'm not posting about this Movie to get into my own personal views on teenage sex, contraception, abortion, adoption, and teen pregnancy. I simply wanted to point out that this movie exists and was an invaluable tool to my own family. Additionally, while locating links for this post I discovered Lifetime even has The Pregnancy Pact discussion guides available on their site.
If you are interested, The Pregnancy Pact encores tonight at 7pm ET.
