I'd say, "There are 7 people living here and a dog, 7 people. This is a very busy household and the last thing we need is another pet. I barely have time to brush my hair in the morning some days. I am certainly not going to be giving up minutes to clean out a cage or scrub a tank."
My son Hayden would say, "I'll take care of it myself. You won't have to do a thing. I'll clean the tank/cage. I'll feed it. You'll never even know it is here at all. I'll also keep my room clean all the time, get straight A's in my classes, and watch the twins every day after school. I'll bring you breakfast in bed and clean Cordelia's room too."
I'd then say, "No." until about six weeks ago.
