Each Christmas my family heads to my parent's vacation home in Colorado. The entire family loves it there. Even on my ultimate fantasy version of a family vacation, I'd head to that same place. The difference would be the addition of a "helper".
Since this is a fantasy, this special helper will come to my home a couple days before the trip help get all the laundry up to speed and aid with getting all that packing done. Perhaps a red and green clad elf? We'll still drive to our destination since we are always so loaded down with gear, but this time someone else will pack the car, snacks, and toys needed to survive it. Elves should be good at that right? They pack Santa's sled all the time after all.
Once there, the accommodations will be exactly the same, I wouldn't change a thing about those. Instead, I'd just bring the eager elf along. My time would be freed up a bit allowing me to have dinner out once with hubby, play a game with the bigger kids, get dressed without interruption, and linger at the table chatting a touch longer while this "helper" was around to insure the twins along with the other kids were having a wonderful trip too.
The elf could also hit the grocery store and make dinner while we make snowmans or take our sleds out. The elf could also handle picking up the ski rentals, washing the apparel needed for the next day, and walking the dog. Dog care has to be easier than reindeer, right? With all that boring stuff handled by the jolly little elf, hubby and I would have more time to give each of the kids that one on one time they crave.
Ice skating for Cordelia with Mommy? A hot cocoa for Hayden at the hotel near by with Daddy? Some basketball at the near by field house with the guys for JC? Perhaps for Christmas I'll ask Santa if I can keep the elf. Why shouldn't every day be a fantasy vacation, right?
The reality is, I am doing what I love. I'm just doing a lot of things I don't love too.
