Chocolate Cheerios {review, recipe, giveaway}

There is a new member of the Cheerios family!  And like it's siblings, Chocolate Cheerios is low in fat and calories making it a heart healthy breakfast treat.  Additionally, it contains at least 8 grams of whole grain per serving (at least 48 grams recommended daily), and is a good source of calcium and vitamin D.

Made with real cocoa, you might just feel like you are having dessert for breakfast with this new cereal.  In fact, it is the decadent chocolate flavor that makes this an equally fun after school snack.

MyBlogSpark, on behalf of General Mills, sent us a Chocolate Cheerios Gift Pack for our family to try and is providing us with a second gift pack to give to one lucky reader!

We ate some Chocolate Cheerios for breakfast, ate some more as an afternoon treat, and put some to good use creating yummy dessert bars that even my son with food allergies could try.  I modified one of the suggested recipes on the Cheerios Website to the following:

(making this a dairy, egg, and nut free treat)

Chocolate Cheerio & Soynut Butter Bars

5 cups Chocolate Cheerios® cereal
1 1/2 cups salted pretzel sticks
1 cup corn syrup
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 cup creamy soynut butter
1/2 cup dairy free chocolate chips

1.  Spray 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray. In large bowl, combine cereal, chocolate chips, and pretzel sticks; set aside.

2.  In 2-quart saucepan, combine corn syrup and sugars. Heat to boiling over medium heat, stirring constantly; remove from heat. Stir in soynut butter.

3.  Pour soynut butter mixture over cereal mixture; mix until thoroughly coated. Spread evenly in pan.  Allow to set and cool.  Eat.

Ready to try some yourself?  Enter now:  As I mentioned, we are giving away 1 gift pack to a lucky reader.  The Chocolate Cheerios gift pack includes a box of Chocolate Cheerios, as well as a chocolate scented spa kit, and a ceramic cereal bowl.  Simply leave a comment below telling us what time of day you are most likely to nibble on your Chocolate Cheerios if you win.

Optional Additional Entries for:

*Update* Free Samples of Pamper Diapers Available Tomorrow!

Mommy & Daddy have high performace gear, the big kids have high performance gear, and now even little ones like our twins can have high performance gear in the form of a diaper redesign by Pampers.

Pampers has completely redesigned its Cruisers diapers making them 20 percent thinner with no sacrifice in performance.  The new Pampers Cruisers with Dry Max helps lock wetness away up to 12 hours, making this their driest diaper ever. These new Pampers Cruisers with Dry Max officially hit shelves in March and "And Twins make 5!" will be bringing you a review of these diapers when they do.  You can try them for free too!

To celebrate the launch of the Pamper's first-ever high performance diaper, Pampers will be outfitting Team USA athletes and their families, with branded Team USA Pampers Cruisers with Dry Max as they head to Vancouver for the Olympic Winter Games.  Although these Team USA diapers are not for sale, starting January 29th February 15th parents everywhere will be able to request a free sample three-pack of Pampers Cruisers with Dry Max on Pampers.com.  If the sample sent includes a diaper stamped Team USA (randomly inserted in select sample packs), their baby will win a year’s supply of Pampers diapers!

Did you know that a cruising baby in one day can take as many steps as a marathon runner in a race, and a nine-month old baby can crawl up to 400 meters in 20 minutes?

It's this active play that continually inspires the Pampers brand, and that's why moms and dads are encouraged to log on to Pampers.com beginning February 12 to join in celebrating the development of their own best players. Parents will have the ability to upload a video of their baby crawling from left to right, and randomly selected videos will be compiled into a Pampers Cruisers Diapers with Dry Max "Baby Relay" commercial which will air during closing day of the Olympic Winter Games, giving babies a chance to showcase their own playful ability in the same forum as the most elite athletes.

Keep up on all the latest Pampers news & info by becoming a fan of Pampers on Facebook or following Pampers on Twitter.

Teenage Son: The Pregnancy Pact scarier than Paranormal Activity

Just a quick thank you to Lifetime for providing a road to an open dialogue with my 15 year old son about sex and pregnancy.  I dvr'd The Pregnancy Pact, a Lifetime Original Movie, to watch originally by myself.  As fate would have it, virtually nothing else was on the other night when I turned it on.  As a result, my teenage son and husband decided to watch the movie with me.

Half way through this film and my son was admittedly more frightened by the premise than he was by the popular scary movie "Paranormal Activity".  I don't think he had ever pondered the possibility of a teenage girl wanting to get pregnant.  The devious nature of these girls seeking out love and attention by doing something so permanent completely freaked him out.  I was thrilled by this accidental development that came from viewing this show.  He actually wanted / needed to talk about this show when it was over.  Perfect!

Here's the official description for you:  "Inspired by a true story, the film explores the costs of teen pregnancy with a story of a fictional "pregnancy pact" set against the backdrop of actual news reports about teen pregnancy from June 2008. Sidney Bloom (Thora Birch), an on-line magazine journalist, returns to her hometown to investigate the sudden spike in teenage pregnancies at her old high school. Almost immediately, she comes up against Lorraine Dougan (Nancy Travis), the head of the local conservative values group and mother of Sara, a newly pregnant 15-year-old.

Meanwhile, the school nurse (Camryn Manheim) tries to convince the school to provide contraception to students to address the pregnancy epidemic but is met with great opposition from the school and community. As the number of pregnant girls climbs to 18, a media firestorm erupts when Time Magazine reports that the rise in the number of pregnancies at the school is the result of a "pregnancy pact." As the mystery unfolds about whether or not "the pact" is real, Sidney soon realizes that all of the attention is disguising the much larger issues that are at the core of the story."

Now don't worry, I'm not posting about this Movie to get into my own personal views on teenage sex, contraception, abortion, adoption, and teen pregnancy.  I simply wanted to point out that this movie exists and was an invaluable tool to my own family.  Additionally, while locating links for this post I discovered Lifetime even has The Pregnancy Pact discussion guides available on their site.

If you are interested, The Pregnancy Pact encores tonight at 7pm ET.

Old Navy tells me that 30 is the new 20? 30% off that is!

Old Navy is hosting a 2-Day Super Sale Friday and Saturday (1/29-1/30 only). Shoppers get 30% off on every single item in stores – except gift cards – even items already on sale!  And get this, no coupons required.  You can just shop and save!

In fact, Old Navy is so sure you are gonna love the 2-Day Super no new coupons will be available at OldNavyWeekly.com until Sunday.

I'm going to have to head back to old Navy for another set of Super Hero Hoodies for the twins.  I had picked up a superman and batman one last weekend, but at those prices I think I'll have to grab another for each of them.  Plus, my daughter has her eye on one of their spring weight double breasted trench coats.

Good Moods are Feeding America

The other day I caught something while watching the Today Show about the brand Oscar Mayer that I thought was worthy of sharing with my readers.  It seems Oscar Mayer, the B-A-L-O-G-N-A people are launching something called the Good Mood Mission with a little the help of Emmy and Tony Award winner, Kristin Chenoweth.

So what is the Good Mood Mission?  "The charity initiative is on a mission to turn America’s good moods into 2 million pounds of food for Feeding America, the nation’s leading hunger-relief organization, which provides food to 25 million Americans every year."

The Oscar Mayer brand is doing their part by making a 1 million pound food donation and is asking for America’s help to match this at www.GoodMoodMission.com.  This is where you and I come in, but trust me, this is a simple request.  You simply have to tell them what puts you in a good mood.

For every “good mood moment” America creates or shares, Oscar Mayer will donate more food to reach the total goal of 2 million pounds. The Oscar Mayer brand has made it easy to share a smile with a simple click and everyone across the country is invited to join the mission at www.GoodMoodMission.com or www.Facebook.com/OscarMayer.

From January through September, the more good moods shared and sent to others, the more pounds of food donated to Feeding America. And, while helping others should be incentive enough, the campaign rewards participation with Oscar Mayer brand coupons and other fun offers.

Did I mention there is even a snappy jingle to go with this campaign?  I've shared a couple things that put me in a good mood, what about you?

Moving from the Crib to a Bed (with twins)

”toddler

How do you know when your child is ready to move from the crib to a big bed?  Each child is different, some parents can hold off on this transition until age 3 while others show signs of readiness by as early as 18 months.  Keeping safety in mind, it is time to make the move if your child is demonstrating the ability to get out of the crib on their own.

The twins began climbing / jumping out at age 19 months.  We have wood floors in the nursery, making this move a priority to beds a priority.

What are the things I should do to prepare for this move?  Now's the time to make doubly sure baby /toddler proofing is fully ready for a child (or two children in this case) being alone and free in the room.  Secure any furniture that could tip of climbed on, add drawer locks where needed, inspect for missing plug covers, make any cords unreachable, check blind and curtain cords, and place a safety gate at their door to prevent wandering.  The diaper pail can be a big toddler magnet, so make sure your pail is either locked in a closet, placed up on the changing table at night, or is one that you feel confident is toddler tamper proof.  We recently switched to this new Munchkin Diaper Pail and have yet to have an issue.

I'd also suggest you consider a placing video baby monitor in the room especially for twins or more.  A video monitor enables you to view what they are doing without going in and upsetting the mood unnecessarily.  On the flipside, it can also show you times you should go in such as when one is sitting on the other's leg.  We are using the Safety 1st Prism Color Video Baby Monitor to keep an eye on our twins when along in their room and are quite pleased with it.

How does one ease into this big move from crib to bed? Some experts suggest you start slowly by napping in new bed and sleeping overnight in the crib, but sometimes this isn't possible especially with twins.  The space required for all those beds usually isn't there.  Plus, if you are making the move due to safety concerns, why delay? I'd suggest making the new beds as exciting, special, and comfortingly familiar as possible.  If your move is to a toddler bed, use the same bedding, but add a special new pillowcase and or blanket.  If you are moving your child to a twin or larger bed, consider allowing your child to pick out the new sheets or making an accent pillow from the old bedding.

Any Toddler terrific finds for this move?  We found the absolute perfect pillowcases for this important move, Milo & Gabby Cozy Companions.  They sent us a couple of their animal shaped pillowcases for review and the twins along with the rest of us adore them.  They are made from ultra-soft 100% cotton with soft poly fill in in the tails, ears, fins or feet. You just put them on any standard sized pillow you already own. The twins are very into all dog things right now, so two of the "Harold the Dog" style pillowcases were a huge success.  Other styles include a cat, a bunny, a dinosaur, a horse, and a fish.  ( Watch for a giveaway of the cat style pillow soon!)

Toddler Beds or Twin Beds?  We personally went with inexpensive toddler beds from Ikea for the twins.  Our cribs actually convert to twin beds, but we decided not to move straight into those just yet.  We felt the twins would benefit from the extra room to play right now.  We also liked the smaller cozier aspect of toddler beds since they are making this move fairly young.  We currently have the two toddler beds pushed together with a bolster / body style pillow in the middle (not pictured) to keep them from falling in the crack or rolling on the other.  We actually re-purposed our two much beloved nursing pillows for this bolster, by placing both nesting pillows in a single body pillowcase.

If you do decide to go with twin beds, look into bed rails to keep them from rolling off.  Other options are lots of pillows on the floor or even just using the mattress at first.

Other basic needs?  Don't forget to leave a spot in bed or near the bed for other comfort items your child might want.  Their stuffed dog, favorite blankie, pacifier if still being used, and even a water filled sippy cup by the bed.  A nightlight is also a good idea, although my plug into the socket style seem to be a bit too interesting to curious toddlers.  I just spotted one of those "take with you" style nightlights by Munchkin in a dog style the other day.  I may just have to hit Target to snag a couple as Valentine gifts to the little guys.  (That way, I can place them on a dresser and hide the cord.)

Last minute tips?  Stick with your evening / bedtime routine as much as possible. Follow all of the same procedures for going to bed as you would when they were going down in their cribs.  Only now, perhaps you can sit on the edge of the bed to sing or read.

Our routine goes something like this ...  After dinner, daddy and one of the siblings bring the twins upstairs to bathe, put on jammies, and brush teeth while the rest of us do downstairs clean up.  The twins then come into our room to play quietly while the family plays with them and catches up a tad on a favorite T.V. show.  Eventually the twins mellow fully and we move into their room for storytime and some cuddles.

Remember this is a process that takes time.  I've done this with my 3 older children and now it is time for the twins.  Each child was different and thus each transition took a different length of time and had  unique adjustments that had to be made.  Remain patient and consistent, good luck!

Tupperware has it all

What doesn't Tupperware have?  I have a girlfriend who is a huge Tupperware fan.  It began with her mom and carried on with her and her sister.  She has the perfect Tupperware container or gadget for every need.  Her salad is tossed and ready in a bowl that would collapse when it was empty, the homemade salad dressing was in a special mix, shake, and serve style container, the ingredients were prepared by Tupperware chopping gadgets.  She truly made me look like an amateur.

Well she use to anyway ... Tupperware sent me a plethora of fun products to try and show off now too.  And guess what?  Not only do they all look nifty, they actually work wonderfully well too.  I was highly impressed with the range of items I was sent from Tupperware.  I put all of it to good use including the mini stuffables set that is microwave safe, the quick shake container for mixing liquids, the quick chef which allows for even the kids to get involved in the chopping, and the genius flatout storage containers which shrink down flat when not in use.

And while I had always thought I needed to get "in" with a consultant to get my hands on all these cool goods, there are other options.  You don't have to know a Tupperware Consultant to get your hands on some of these same Tupperware items.  In addition to the option of finding a consultant in your area, you can order some Tupperware products online.  You can also visit a mall showcase in your area.

Did you watch Oprah's No Texting while Driving show?

MomsMsg.com

Talking on the phone while driving, texting while driving, twittering, checking facebook ... don't do it!  "Talking on a cell phone while driving is just as dangerous as driving drunk."

I've blogged about the issue of texting while driving before, in fact I keep a button on the sidebar of my site to warn people of it's dangers.  Further more, I've personally signed the Mom sends the Msg pledge not to do it myself.  Additionally, I've hounded my husband about not doing it and keep pointing out to my 15 year old son that when he begins driving, he needs to put his phone in the glove box to avoid any temptation.

With this in mind, I was thrilled to hear that the talk show legend herself, Oprah Winfrey, was taking on this important issue herself.  If you missed the "America's New Deadly Obsession Episode," here's a link to the full 1 hour show, or here is a link to the 15 min version if you'd prefer.  Oprah's even created her own pledge, the No Phone Zone Pledge.  Will you be signing?

Hand to Toe Pampering from Duri™ & Pure Silk: A Quick Valentine Treat for Mommy

Where does the time go?  Believe it or not it's almost time to get the kids going on making and addressing cards for school and for you to bake heart shaped treats!

As nice as it might be to spend all of Valentine’s Day being primped and pampered at some spa in Chicago, my busy mom of 5 schedule simply won't allow.  In fact, I'm actually going to be spending most of that weekend away at a Dance competition with my 8 year old daughter.

As crazy as my schedule may be, I'm certain even I can find enough time for minor indulgence including silky, smooth legs and manicured fingers and toes in honor of the day.  In fact, I've already had a chance to do a "mini trial run" thanks to the review samples I was sent of Pure Silk Moisturizing Shave Cream in Raspberry Mist and romantic red and pink nail color shades from Duri Cosmetics.

Pure Silk Moisturizing Shave Cream in Raspberry Mist has nourishing ingredients like aloe that can help you achieve sexy, soft legs and it smells yummy too!  I have a feeling this is going to become a staple in my routine.

And to further my Valentine’s Day look, I can pick from Duri nail polish in shades like (350) Passion, a deep red and (199) Love Me Tender, a pretty pink.  I'm sporting the "Love Me Tender" on my toes currently and saving the "Passion" for the big day.  I try to make it a habit of always polishing my toes and with that in mind, I was quite impressed with the quality of the Duri polishes.

For a more festive mani/pedi this Valentine’s Day, Duri Cosmetics suggests you try any of these pink and red nail color shades:

#414 Cupid Rules (flirty pink)
#413 Just One Kiss (matte pastel pink)
#199 Love Me Tender (dark mauve)
#378 Prelude to a Kiss (dark peach)
#330 Sweetheart (bright red)
#350 Passion (dark sensual red)
#351 Blind Date (deep purplish red)
#348 My Velvet Heart (dark red with gold shimmer)
#397 Love Me Crazy (deep red)
#510 Every Day is A Valentine (bright red)

They are $5 per bottle; available at duri.com or by calling 1-800-724-2216.

Pure Silk Moisturizing Shave Cream in Raspberry Mist, for silky smooth legs, is available at drugstores and mass retailers nationwide. Look for it in a handy travel size 2.25 oz can for $0.99, and 9.5 oz NEW 100% rust-free aluminum cans that are more user-friendly for $1.79!

Go Diego Go!: Lion Cub Rescue DVD

There is a new "Go Diego Go DVD" available on Tuesday, January 26th.  Go Diego Go!:  Lion Cub Rescue includes 4 animal themed episodes of this popular Nick Jr. children's television series; Welcome Home, Lion Cub, Diego’s Ringed Seal Rescue, Diego Reunites Hippo & Oxpecker, and Diego’s Orangutan Rescue.

I'm happy to report that the twins and I enjoyed all 100 minutes of Diego's adventures on this soon to release DVD sent to us for review.  In fact, we roared right along with them all!

The main epsiode's plot begins as "Diego, Baby Jaguar and Daddy Lion head out to Lion Cub’s party, they discover some little lions in trouble. With Diego and Daddy Lion’s help, we save a Baby Lion stuck on a broken branch, we use our lion claws to rip Cousin Lion out of an animal trap and we find Sister Lion who’s hiding in the tall grass."

Suave Kids: Wash them Grow

Like it or not my babies are growing up on me.  My oldest son is a busy High School Freshman who plays on the football team and runs on the track team.  My 11 year old son is a busy guy himself with basketball and all his other activities,  my only girl will turn 9 in March and is looking older by the second dressed in HipHop costumes and complete hair and make-up for dance competions.  Even my babies are getting so big on me.

In fact, my now 19 month old twins are in a major transition phase right now.  We are tackling the move from cribs to toddler beds and then we will be working on getting rid of the pacifiers.  All this change can be very hard on little ones, extra stressful when it involves two different boys with two different sets of fears, reactions, and needs.

Some things can and should stay the same though.  As a Mommy of 5, I've seen how children need a sense of consistency, routine, and stability not just during these transitional phases but during all stages of growth and development.  It's very important to stick to things like bedtime rituals as much as possible.

Recognizing that bath time is a common pre-bed ritual in many households.  The Suave Kids® Wash Them Grow campaign encourages you to recognize your child's bath time routine as an opportunity to teach, nurture and transition your child through the stages of growth and cleansing.  When your child washes with Suave® Kids, you'll experience the joy of milestone bath time moments with every single fun-loving splash, no matter what the stage of childhood.

To kick-off the campaign, Suave Kids® is launched the Wash Them Grow Sweepstakes on January 18, 2010, with chances to win awesome weekly prizes of a Family e-Keepsake Kit (that includes a video camera, laptop and digital camera) and the Grand Prize of a family vacation to Orlando!  Simply head over to WashThemGrow.com to play a fun online trivia game and receive an automatic entry into the Suave Kids® Wash Them Grow Sweepstakes.

You can enter daily from January 18th until February 22 and literally watch your baby grow online as you progress through the milestones of clean!

We've been washing all the kids grow recently with 4 great Products sent to us by Suave:  Suave Kids Berry Body Wash, Suave Kids Strawberry Body Wash, Suave Kids Free and Gentle Body, & Suave Kids Moisturizing Body Wash (all ophthalmologist-tested and tear-free).  Each of the kids seems to have their own favorite.  Cordelia loves the Strawberry, Hayden likes the Berry, and the twins are putting the other two to good use.

We Interrupt this Program to bring you this special message from ... a mom about to lose her mind.

”crib

My plan, as I previously posted, was to work on giving up our pacifiers starting this week.  However, the twins apparently had another plan for this week.

Crib Jumping!  (It's a bit like sky diving without the chute.)

That's right, my little darlings are clearly part monkey and they've added climbing / jumping / falling out of their cribs to their list of things they love to do.  Other fun things to do that they shouldn't would of course include attacking my desk and the fridge.

In any event, their recent enhanced climbing "skills" and our hard wood floors have made the need to transition from crib to bed a higher priority then giving up binkies for the moment.

I know a lot of you were interested in hearing how our progress went on the pacifier front, so I wanted to let you know about the delay in programming.  Instead, we will be featuring our "Crib to Toddler Bed Transition" first.  Hurray for me?

Then "if" I survive moving twin 19 month olds to beds, I will return to the "Binkie matter" because I am just THAT lucky.

Anti Monkey Butt Powder {Review & Giveaway}

I've been asked to review a plethora of items over the past year and yet I am confident "Anti Monkey Butt Powder" wins hands down in terms of most hilarious name and logo graphic. However, the effectiveness of this product is nothing to laugh at, it actually works really well.

My kids and I have pretty sensitive skin, and often this causes a problem when combined with certain apparel and activity. For example, my daughter has a HipHop costume that includes a funky jacket that looks great but was making her horribly itchy and splotchy before and during her performances. A bit of Lady Anti Monkey Butt Powder on her arms, back, and chest solved this problem though.

Anti Monkey Butt is designed to relieve the frictional discomfort people often experience when performing certain activities such as using exercise equipment, running, walking, or dancing. Its unique ingredients work quickly to absorb sweat and provide cooling effective relief of irritation on the areas of rubbed skin.

I was sent 2 bottles of this powder by the company for purposes of review and found Anti Monkey Butt Powder and Lady Anti Monkey Butt Powder to be far more effective then plain baby powder for these type of issues. Why? Because along with talc, Anti Monkey Butt Powder contains calamine. Calamine is an anti-itch and anti-chafing powder that actually soothes irritated skin making this product a "dance costume crisis" solver in our household. Additionally, it has become a hero in terms of snowboarding, basketball uniform irritation, and more.

The other irritation it reduced?  This was in terms of my mental health.  Props to Anti Monkey Butt for vanishing all the complaints about itchies and scratchy fabrics and skin redness and so on and so on.

The Secret ingredient is POM Wonderful

If you are keeping up on the latest in terms of nutrition tips, you are probably well aware that consuming a diet rich in natural antioxidants is highly recommended.  And while Mommies love to add all these "good for you" items into their kid's diets, it isn't always quite that easy to add depending on the child.

My daughter in particular is a very hesitant eater and while she gets better at trying new things each year, it is still a struggle.  With this in mind, I'm always pleased to find a way to "sneak" in some healthy bites.  I've found Pom Wonderful Juice to be a perfect source for adding antioxidants to my children's intake without a battle.  According to the company, Pom Wonderful is "bursting with superior levels of naturally occurring antioxidants and backed by $32 million in medical research".  Additionally, it has "no added sugar, colorants or cheap filler juices."

A few bottles of juice arrived from Pom Wonderful for us to review and get creative with last week.   We put it to good use in various ways.  First, I decided to add a couple ounces of it to breakfast time fruit and yogurt smoothies we were making for the kids.  I just blended together a bit of frozen fruit, some yogurt, and the Pom Wonderful.  The results were deemed as really yummy by all the kids.

Hubby found he loved adding an ounce or two of the Pom Wonderful to his morning orange juice.  Another fun way to "sneak" some of this beneficial beverage into your kids is to create a fun fizzy cocktail.  We even combined a few ounces of Pom Wonderful with some 7up and topped it with a fresh strawberry for a special mocktail style treat.

Pom Wonderful can also be used in food recipes too.  I discovered they had a rather large collection of them on their website that covered everything from appetizers all the way to desserts using Pom Wonderful juice.  I may have to try making the yummy looking Chocolate and Pom Wonderful cupcakes with my last bottle.  Mmm!  Who doesn"t like cupcakes?

What's a Hugga-Bebe?

Back in August I received an email from an a reader who wrote "I just wanted to say how much I love your blog.  I am just a grandma who has been following your adventured and has purchased a few of the products that you have recommended."

This reader went on to tell me about a product called My Hugga Bebe that has won a lot of awards in the past year or so.  She told me how the Hugga Bebe is particularly handy for twins who are often times born premature thus needing extra help supoorting themselves.  She told that she felt it is priced reasonably too.

Now how could I not request a review of this item after an endorsement like that?  At the very least, I had to find out what on earth this thing was.  Hugga Bebe was nice enough to indeed provide the twins and I with two to test out.

So what is it?  Hugga-Bébé is a patent-pending, innovative product that allows children 4-months to toddler years to experience comfort and security while playing in activity centers, jumpers, walkers, and park bucket swings. Hugga-Bébé's unique wrap-around design literally hugs your baby making those "one size fits all" seats really fit.  Basically, it is a support pillow that takes the place of blankets and other objects a parent might try to prop baby with to sit them up better in all those activity style devices.

The twins were already done with a lot of those items by the time we tested these, but we have been using them in bucket swings when weather allows.  It sure makes them more comfortable and it keeps the twins from sitting all "askew".  They'll easily be able to use them again next summer too.  I only wish I had known about these when my little guys were smaller.  We had many floppy bodied days we could have used these during.

I'd LOVE to show you pictures of the twins using them, but unfortunately the pictures I took didn't turn out.  Instead, you'll have to sneak on over to the MyHuggaBebe.com website for some "in use" shots.  It's just a tad too cold for us to head back outside for a re-shoot.

Bye Bye Binkie: Giving up the Pacifier

Most experts seem to look at the age and development of the child when determining readiness to give up the pacifier.  The twins are 18 months (almost 19 months) and that seems to be the magic number among most of these experts.

However, there clearly is a readiness of the family to be considered as well.  I've noticed a wave of "Dread and Fear" wash over our household when the topic of possible binkie extermination comes up.  My high school freshman age son is volunteering to pay any orthodontic and mental health bills that may occur if I could just wait 4 years until he is safely off to college before starting this process.  He's not the only one trying to delay this process either, my 11 year old son is considering a long stay with Grandma and Grandpa and my 8 year old daughter simply tears up and curls into a fetal position.  My husband is all about the boys "manning up" now but he's a total softy.  He'll be first to slip them one when the going gets rough.  I have to admit, the thought of weaning them both from their binkie at the same time seems twice as daunting to me too.  However, I've yet to have a child not survive the process.

Further motivation to me is the fact that it appears they have stopped making their preferred pacifier model.  Right before Christmas I noticed we were down to only 4 or 5 total and I was considering buying a spare pack before our long car ride.  I checked out several stores and they were no where to be found.  Some may call this "a sign" others may call this "a curse".  In any event, I am now faced with a limited supply which is motivating me to get this process in motion before forced to make them both go "cold turkey".

So now it's time to rally the troops and head into binkie battle.  Here's the general process I've used in the past that I plan to try again this time.
  1. Pick the time wisely.  Don't start this process when hubby is going to be out of town for a week, or 3 days before Christmas.  Try to find a lull in your schedule to help stack the deck in your favor.
  2. Find all the Pacifiers.  Sweep the battlefield for "mines".  The last thing you need is for an old binkie popping up somewhere unexpected once you've begun to ration the supplies.
  3. Develop a Plan of Attack.  Slowly start limiting binkie use more and more.  Maybe start with just giving them the binkie at naptime, in the car, and at bedtime.  Next go to just naptime and bedtime, next it goes to just at bedtime, and finally they vanish completely.
  4. Encourage a replacement attachment item.  Don't send you child into battle completely unarmed.  Give them another way besides the pacifier to self comfort themselves.  Keep handing them their favorite blanket, doll, or stuffed animal as an alternative item to soothe themselves.
I plan to begin this next week, as hubby is out of town at the moment.  I'll keep you posted on our progress.  In the meantime, I'd love to hear your tips as well!  Here's an additional source of information on this topic if you are interested.

We did it!  Read about the how we said our final goodbyes to binkies in a special way.

This Diaper Pail doesn't stink: Arm & Hammer™ Diaper Pail by Munchkin

A while back I was asked by Munchkin to provide photos of my nursery along with tips on keeping it fresh.  I previously mentioned that these tips and photos were being featured along with those of other blogger's on diaperpail.com.  This site was created by Munchkin to launch it's new Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail.

I was also provided with one of these new Diaper Pails to review.  The verdict is in and I can safely say that this diaper pail doesn't stink.  The combination of the bag system and baking soda does a wonderful job of keeping the odors in the pail.  Even when the pail is opened, icky scents are kept at bay making this pail a must have for the smell sensitive types.

Additionally, I found this system much easier to use then other designs on the market.  There is no twisting, cutting, or turning required.  You just insert the diaper into the pail and close the lid.  Another plus, is that the lid's design is one not easily opened by curious toddlers.  (A problem I had begun to experience with our old pail.)  Changing the bag is simple too.  The bag literally slips in and snaps into place and removes with the same ease as well.  The bag then snaps shut to keep orders inside even after tossing into your large can outside.

As a twin mommy, the only thing I would change is true for every single diaper pail I've seen on the market.  I'd love to see an extra extra large capacity pail be made available for those of us with multiple little ones in diapers.

Regardless, this is the best diaper pail I've used and with five children I've used quite a few.

I've been using these sheets exclusively since posting about them in May and I am very happy with the results.  And, in a household that includes 5 kids and 2 adults, I can safely say I know a thing or two about laundry.  You can read more about my experience with Purex here

Zuvo's Water Purator: You mean we can drink water from the tap?

I'm certain you are all well aware of the benefits and importance of drinking water. Unfortunately, many of us find that simply drinking water from your home tap is not ideal or even recommended. Tap water may contain lead, parasitic cysts, non-pathogenic micro-organisms and unpleasant levels of chlorine. Some tap water issues can pose health risks to you and your family, while others simply make your water taste and smell bad.

Our city tap water has a lead issue, so we have had bottled water delivered for quite some time now.  It was better then taking our chance with the lead issues, but far from convenient and obviously an added expense I'd love to eliminate.  We had to find a spot for the cooler, find a spot to store all the jug refills, and come up with an amount of water needed so we didn't end up without for a week or two until our next delivery.  And of course, the jug always ran out when all the strong bodies were gone, leaving me to change the darn thing.  Those days are gone now though.

Zuvo provided us with an under counter model of their water purator for review and we became instant fans.  Installation was super easy, my husband had it up and running in about 30 minutes.  If you prefer, Zuvo also offers an above the counter model that is ready in minutes.

The whole family agrees, the water from our dedicated Zuvo faucet tastes great.  We've been using the Zuvo faucet since right around Thanksgiving time and don't miss our bottled water at all.  Gone is the large cooler and jugs, the worries about plastics leeching into our water from their containers, and the extra expense and hassle incurred with water delivery.  Gone also is the lead and other nasty stuff from our tap water, making drinking from a household faucet actually possible.

Aside from the rare occasion where we have to change out the filter or bulb, our water is now hassle free and far less expensive to acquire.  The filter needs to be changed about every 6 months and the bulb should last about 7-10 years.  According to their site, Zuvo comes in at around 6 cents per gallon putting it well below the price of other faucet and pitcher water systems too.

If you are like me, you probably want some more info on how it works.  Let's face it, it is hard to see the bad stuff in water to begin with, so how do we really know the stuff is gone?  Zuvo has a 5 step process to clean the water that you can read all about how it works here.  I think you'll find that the process is setup rather impressively.  If you find you'd like to give it a try yourself, take the Zuvo 60 day risk-free challenge.

Perhaps your children will be as impressed as mine were with the ability to drink water at home from the tap.

Shhh! Don't tell my Kids what General Mills is doing.

There was a time, not so long ago, when moms feared navigating the cereal isle for fear of the sugary cereal pleas from their children.

My oldest is 15 and I remember this time all too well.  However, you may have noticed that navigating this isle is getting easier and easier thanks to the commitment of companies such as General Mills.

General Mills has been reducing sugar in their cereals while increasing key nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, and providing whole grain.  They've recently announced an even further commitment to these efforts by vowing to reduce cereals advertised to kids under 12 to single digit grams of sugar per serving.

I've turned this knowledge to my advantage and potentially boosted myself on the "Mom of the Year" spectrum.  Utilizing the 4 General Mills Cereal Box Vouchers provided to me by MyBlogSpark on behalf of General Mills, I allowed my kids to pick out some of their most coveted cereals as a "special treat".  They chose Trix, Cookie Crisp, Apple Cinnamon Cheerios, and Lucky Charms.

Want to use this knowledge to your advantage too?  Right now if you visit here you will find a $1 off coupon for one of four General Mills cereals.  Additionally, you can click here to find additional kid's cereal information provided by General Mills.

Winnie the Pooh: A Valentine for You - Special Edition DVD

On January 5, Disney DVD released the beloved and heartwarming classic, Winnie the Pooh: a Valentine for You Special Edition. This Valentine themed animated collection features three Winnie the Pooh stories including a new-to-DVD adventure (“My Hero) a fun bonus feature (“Catch the Love Bug” game), Pooh-themed Valentines cards inside each DVD plus all features from the original.

The twins and I have watched this DVD (provided to us by Disney Home Entertainment) twice so far and it appears to be a hit with both boys as well as Mommy.  What's not to love about Pooh Bear, Piglet, Tigger, Rabbit, Eeyore and the rest of the gang?

All three tales are very sweet.  In a "Valentine for You", the gang worries Christopher Robin will forget all about them after observing him making a Valentine for a special girl.  In "Un-Valentine's Day", Rabbit attempts to cancel Valentine's Day but a jar of honey ends up reviving this celebration of love.  "My Hero" is a new-to-DVD adventure that shows the lesson of two friends truly helping each other. When Piglet saves Tigger’s life, Tigger decides to repay the favor by being Piglet’s servant.  As you might guess, Tigger causes Piglet more harm then good in this job.

Your little one is certain to be inspired to send Valentine's of their own after viewing these 3 flicks, so the included Valentine's Cards are just what you'll need to help them continue with the theme.

Winter Wardrobe Finds from 191 Unlimited

Yesterday's post about the Twins showing some "Brotherly Love" was met with several comments and emails including a few on Cormac and Declan's wardrobe.  So, here's all the details ...

I was provided these shirts for review by 191 Unlimited.  The style worn is called the Montreux and it is available in a wide range of sizes (from 2T all the way up to my high school age son's size XL 18-20).  191 Unlmited also makes shirts for Adults too (Small to XXXLarge), so Daddy won't have to be jealous.

I was very impressed by the quality of these threads.  The attention to detail was most impressive and comfort was clearly kept in mind.  Please note the contrasting pattern on the inside of Cormac's (on the right) rolled over cuff.  The Montreux is just one of several different design options available.

Here's some interesting background info on 191 Unlimited.  191 Unlimited was founded in 2002 with $191 and a dream. Longtime best friends Parth Sharma and Girish Karnani literally took a gamble on their idea by taking $191 to the casino.  They turned it into enough money to launch their first 191 Unlimited collection.

The two college grads then loaded the samples into their car and went on a two month trek from New York to Los Angeles and back, stopping in as many cities as possible to show their line to specialty stores.  The founders had four principles by which they wanted each shirt to be made, awesome fit, extreme comfort, innovative detailing and affordability.

The Twins are showing some Brotherly Love

At 18 months, our twins are really starting to show how much they love each other.  Up until now, we had moments of extreme like and moments of complete dislike that seemed to flash in between tolerance and acceptance.  However lately I've noticed that, while they still fight over a toy or get jealous of the others time with certain big people, they truly care about each other deeply.

I often notice it the most when one is away from the other twin.  Cormac is typically the last to wake in our house on weekdays.  He seems to need more sleep than his twin Declan.  Declan will come down and hang out for a while with everyone, but eventually we find he'll end up by the stairs calling upwards for Cormac to wake up.

We've also noticed one will go get the other and lead him "hand in hand" to something deemed cool, fun, or perhaps even naughty.  Even toddlers have more fun when they have a friend along to share the experience.  Additionally, we've witnessed them giving up their own pacifier to their brother who is having a needy moment and even sharing a bite of a yummy treat because they seemed to know brother would love it too.

The most obvious and enjoyable example of their loving twin bond is their new fondness for hugging each other.  Currently Declan (the twin on the left) tends to initiate the hugging the most.  I should point out that he is the same twin who would demonstrate his frustration by biting his twin brother 6 months back.  Declan is the kind of child that wears his emotions on his sleeve.

I'm certain his twin, Cormac, is as thrilled as I am that love is in the air.

The Clouds that Touched the Hill

We've returned back to reality, leaving winter wonderland and days filled with mainly play behind.  Our arrival home was met with a large personal *thud*, the passing of the last of my grandparents "Nana".  It was not unexpected.  Nana was 90 years old and had been slowly fading away ever since her husband "Poppops" had passed 4 years ago.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Nana and I have a bit more in common then our grandmother and granddaughter bond.  She was a woman who loved to write and she absolutely adored children.  In fact, since I also like to doodle, I helped illustrate one of her books the family decided to publish as a surprise to her about 10 years ago.

Unlike myself, Nana kept her writings mainly private.  I had to beg for a copy of one of her many tales for years and years.  It proved to be worth the wait though.

"The Cloud that Touched the Hill" is a very sweet story.  One of it's main characters is a boy named "Charlie" who was clearly modeled after Nana's real life brother Jean and "Arthur" the dog was based on Nana and Poppops's own dog, an over sized shaggy English Sheep Dog also named Arthur.

In addition to many personal memories of Nana herself, Nana left us all with this very special legacy.  A legacy that I can share with my children and they can share with their children.  A gift that in fact can be shared generation after generation in the form of written prose intended to touch the hearts of children.

The icing on the cake for my children and myself is the fact that Nana personally signed and inscribed each of our copies of her book.  These inscriptions provided to be much needed solace last night as I tucked one of the kid's into bed.  Cordelia and I read the book together.  I then pointed out the inscription to her that said "May your Dreams touch the Sky!  I love you very much.  Sincerely, Nana"

Cordelia vowed to work on having big dreams.  I promised to have big dreams too.  I venture to guess many children in our family will be taking this advice for years and years to come.

And Nana, she is now in the heavenly sky, likely surrounded by the Clouds that Touched the Hill.

Thanks, Nana. We love you too!

Winners Announced:

Winner of the CarryYou stroller accessory is # 10 Chelsea.
Winner of the Darda Cars Raceway Set is # 140 Jeanette.

Goodbye to 2009

Last night we said good bye to 2009 and today we head home from our winter holiday in Colorado.  On we head into 2010 beginning with a car trip home to Illinois.  Soon we shall return to our routine which includes school for the oldest 3, work for Daddy, weekly errands, dance classes, football training, basketball practices, and home alone time with Mommy for the twins.

Our vacation was much needed and appreciated.  The older kids enjoyed skiing and boarding with Daddy, Uncle Mike, Uncle Bill, and Grandma G.G.  The twins put their snowsuits, boots, and mittens to use when sledding in front of the house.  Everyone enjoyed lots of great food including dinner at Splendidos, take out from Old Forge Pizza and Lark Burger, and lots of yummy home cooked meals.

There were 16 of us here in total to enjoy this magical time and I am certain we will be recanting tales from this holiday for many many years to come.  How blessed we all are to have a location like this to gather.

2009 may not have been perfect, it was not without some heart aches and disappointments for our family.  However, 2009 brought us many times I will treasure as well.  Our twins learned to walk and even talk a bit.  Our oldest son graduated 8th grade and moved on to high school. There were starring roles in Christmas programs and amazing dance recitals just to name a few.  There were even fabulously ordinary days where we did little and enjoyed it a lot.

I'd like to think 2010 will be filled to the brim with happiness and joy, but I know each year, each month, each day has it's ups and downs.  And so we begin with Day 1 ...
