Educational Kids Apps for iPad & iPhone (#BackToSchool) 2011

The countdown is on!  Friday is the start of school for my oldest and the other four begin on Monday.  Last chance to oil those rusty brains with a crop of education apps as we run errands in the loaded down minivan.  Here's a list of scholastic minded apps we've recently been utilizing.  You'll note the list starts with apps for the littlest of iDevice users and works it way up to apps for the older student.

Zoo Train by Busy Bee Studios:  The twins love the simple puzzles that include a little word association in the mix.  The musical game complete with single picture song association is a cute game as well.  Our favorite game has to be the train assembly areas though.  Kids can make a train and watch it drive as well as put together a train puzzle.  Parents should be sure to introduce them to the letter area. It provides a very basic introduction to letter recognition complete with voicing the correct letters and words.

Alphabet Photo Machine by 965 Studios:  This one is best described as a cross between alphabet flash cards and an interactive photo album.  Both of my 3 year olds enjoy flipping through this app and looking at the illustrations and photos assigned to each letter.

Hurray for Pre-K by Auryn:  This app is based off of a 32 page photo book of the same title.  The intention is to familiarize your child with typical preschool happenings and surroundings.  Mom and Dad might be slightly distracted at first by the dated apparel, but it short of lends to the charm in the end.

NxtApp 4 Kids by Icon Llc:  This app is a great way to sharpen those addition and subtraction math skills.  The difficulty progresses as your child goes on and exercises include sequencing.  This is a universal app that runs on both iPads and iPhones.

7th Grade Math:  965 Studios makes a ton of level appropriate math testing apps.  We had our soon to be 7th grader try his hand at the 7th grade level, but rest assured they have other grade levels.  On a side note, my 7th grader is RUSTY.

Poetry Creator by Tiny Mobile:  It's not easy to convince my oldest kids they should sharpen up those writing skills by picking up a pen and paper.  However, a mobile electronic version of refrigerator magnet poetry is just what the teacher ordered.  I suggest you skip the word poetry and tell them it's an app for writing Hip Hop songs, you'll be golden from there.  (Please note this is for the older crowd, high school age or there abouts.  It suggests 12+ but I might suggest even a touch older.)

SAT Vocabulary Prep:  Another 965 Studios educational app.  My oldest will take the college exams this year so it is all about grabbing some moments to practice for the ACT and SAT.  We were hoping to get him into a review class, but his multiple Varsity sports schedule has made that a nearly impossible.  In the meantime, we found this app to be a great starting point.
