Top Christmas iPad & iPod Apps for Kids (2011 Edition)

We will be spending our first Christmas in many years home in Illinois, but we leave the next day for our Colorado Ski trip. A must will be some Christmas themed apps to help the kids pass time on the long drive. Here's a list of our favorites from the many we recently tried.

Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer  based on the classic 1964 TV special we've all grown to adore, is this book app by Oceanhouse Media.  The story includes word by word highlighted reading, fun special effects, and my kids favorite part --- the abdominal snowman complete with his roar.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! - by Dr. Seuss is   another Christmas classic from Oceanhouse Media.  This app maintains much of the sentimental feel of the original book but adds elements this new generation of kids will adore.  Why lug 10 holiday books to Grandma's house when you can put them and more all on a single iPad?

Berenstain Bears' Christmas Tree is yet another quintessential Christmas time story brought to the iPad by Oceanhouse Media.  This one is a nice long story with a terrific message for the holiday season.  We could all learn a thing or two from the Berenstains.

Tacky's Christmas by Oceanhouse Media is fun holiday themed story starring that beloved Penguin Tacky.  In the end it is Tacky's gift that saves this special day.

Christmas Wooden Puzzles by Bacarox may not be made of real wood, but they do have a nostalgic toy feel on a very new platform.  My twins just adore playing with these Christmas themed puzzles and I love not having to pick up the scattered pieces when they are done.

Christmas Tale by TabTale is an app we found last year and loved.  Apparently we weren't alone in our adoration either as it sold 400,000 copies.  This story includes lots of holiday themed activities on it's pages.

Jingle All The Way: Both twins received Jingle an interactive story buddy stuffed animal made by Hallmark last Christmas from my brother and sister-in-law. They loved it! The stuffed Jingle interacts to the physical book you receive when it is read aloud. He barks and such, it is really cute. The downside was the twins at age 3 needed an adult to read the book for them to enjoy it fully. Not anymore! This app subs in by reading the story when mommy is busy or just can't read it for the 15th time in a row. Thank you! Thank you! And if you don't have Jingles, it's still a terrific story that can be enjoyed.

Christmas Eve by So Ouat:  The characters in this story set out to prove to their Mom that Santa does exist and if you had any doubts, you'll surely be convinced after reading this sweet tale.  This app is particularly great for the beginning reader as it can be used to break down words into syllabels.

FirstWords: Christmas is a holiday themed educational app by Learning Touch. My twin three year old sons find this one a lot of fun and I love that it is reinforcing their basic letter and reading concepts while they play on break.

(JUST ADDED December 1st) Free Christmas version of Toca Hair Salon:  We featured the original version of this app back on our July app round-up and now kids can cut, color and style Santa Claus' beard and hair on this free version.
