There's that saying from Steinbeck's 'Of Mice and Men' about best laid plans often going awry, well that was our Halloween this year. I'd planned it all out; lovely outdoor decorations, fridge stocked with Halloween themed foods, and completed costumes. However, I had not planned on anyone getting sick.
Hubby, my 16 year old son, and one of our 3 year old twins, Declan, all came down with something that rendered them utterly miserable.
It took much coaxing to talk our other twin, Cormac, into going to school all alone. He'd never been to school without his twin. I wasn't entirely sure it was even the best thing to do, but I hated to think they both would miss the school party. Worse still, the twins costumes were meant to go together, they were "The Fox and the Hound". The fox went to school alone. I asked the teacher how he did and ... break my heart ... she said he was very sad all day. She added that he seemed so lost without his other half.
Fortunately Declan, the hound, was too sick to realize he was even missing much during the day and thankfully by trick or treat time he at least felt well enough to don his costume and visit 5 or 6 houses. In his state it seemed like a lot of houses and a few additions to his trick or treat bag confirmed he'd obviously done a great job.
It certainly wasn't the Halloween I planned on. It's a rare Halloween when Jello Jigglers are in high demand over mounds and mounds of chocolate and other treats. Believe me I'd take a mulligan for us all if I could, but hey I'll just have to up my Thanksgiving party planning this year.
