Big Kid Life Veterinarian: Kids take on the pretend role of veterinarian in this engaging app. Calm the pet down, give him an xray, and help the animals get better while reinforcing learning concepts by finding shapes, colors, letters, and other objects.
Big Kid Life Fairy Princess: First I should mention that this is not just for girls, this fairy princess app includes a fairy prince character for the boys. The basic premise is educational but not without adding touches of whimsy along the way. It includes interactive story telling, game play, and a quiz at the end of sections to check your child's memory of the events.
Faces iMake: My daughter enjoyed this one quite a bit. She describes it as an app that "uses different objects to make silly faces.: She goes on to mention that "you can also use your own photo gallery photos and make them look silly too." This app uses artist and educator Hanoch Piven's content-loaded collage techniques to take portraiture to a new level. It's a great app to play alone on a rainy day, but it's uses can also extend into various classroom settings.
Kids Mag #2: We haven't seen Kids Mag #1 or #3, but this second edition is a terrific find! It is absolutely loaded down with things to do. Reading, coloring, lessons on space, mazes, counting, dress-up, and various other games. It's more like 10 apps in one. My daughter adds "it teaches letters, body parts, spelling, feelings, and even some Spanish."
Another Monster at the End of This Book: A sequel as well (and again we've not seen the original) but we are certain it can't be any cuter than this! This Sesame Street book by the Callaway Digital Arts Team is done to perfection. It features must-have word highlighting and absolutely hilarious audio and video like animations with both Grover and that darling red monster, Elmo.
DialSafe Pro: If you are looking for a clever way to teach your kids how to dial your number or 911, this is it! The pretend operator does a terrific job of prompting your child for things like their name and address too. I love the "simon like" way it helps kids memorize important numbers.
DoodleCast for Kids: At first glance DoodleCast may look like just another drawing app, but it's much more. This app is not just about the end result, it's about the process your child followed to get there. The application records the entire illustration process along with audio from the microphone to create videos up to 3 minutes long. Doodlecast also has drawing prompts that can be used to inspire such as "draw someones eyes or draw something cold".
Off to Bed!: The last two apps on this month's list are perfect for winding down with your little ones at the end of a long day. Off to Bed! by DADA company guides children through the rituals of sleep with a pleasant voice, sweet lullaby, and soft interactive story.
I Love You to the Moon and Back: The beautiful illustrations by Sue Shanahan and sweet prose may appear to be the stars of this bedtime book app, but the hidden gem is in this apps customization features. Let family members record the various lines of this story to make it a true treasure kids will want to hear nightly.
