Dessert with Friends, Cherry Chocolate Torte

Thanks to Duncan Hines for sponsoring my writing. There's no limit to the baking possibilities, so grab your favorite Duncan Hines mix and Comstock or Wilderness fruit fillings and Bake On! www.duncanhines.com.

What could be sweeter around the holidays than a chocolate cherry torte?  The answer is a chocolate cherry torte shared with friends.  Behold the two layers of moist Duncan Hines chocolate cake, in the middle is Comstock cherry filling on top of a thin layer of Duncan Hines frosting.  The top layer of the torte is also frosted in buttercream and topped with the remaining Comstock Cherries.  The sweetest part was the company who joined us all in rendering my creation to crumbs.  I based my recipe on this Duncan Hine's classic replacing the whipped cream with buttercream.

I'm a fan of any excuse the holidays provide to linger forever with friends telling stories and sharing my favorite baked creations.  I think this cake I recently baked provided fodder for several hours of engaging conversation.  It began with how I made the torte and quickly shifted to numerous other topics including Germany and the Black Forest.  We discussed topics such as who's been there, who's from there, who wants to go there, and who just wants another piece of cake.  I wonder what types of conversation these fun Duncan Hines Nutcracker cupcakes I have on my "to bake" list may have invoked?  Perhaps the ballet, mice, or even wild dreams?  I'll just have to whip them up and find out.

The memories my family and friends share around dessert are filled with not only tasting the desserts together, but the act of baking the goodies together too.  I'll never forget a group of us making these petite mice cookies that swelled to look like giant ugly rats when baked.  Worse yet, the horrible sight of the raisins, used as eyes, exploding in the oven as they got warmer.  While we won't be making those again, we'll likely never stop talking about them.
