I thought I'd share my pleasant but rather un-amazing and very real Valentine's day in case you think you might be the only one who didn't have a complete day filled with rose petals and violin music.
Back tracking a bit, Monday was the one day not to be home sick. The new carpet was being installed in the master bedroom as well as the entire upstairs hallway. This meant no one could be upstairs all day. All 3 of the patients took up residence on the sofa and had to share the small guest bath. I did my best to tone out the complaints about the new carpet scent as well as the banging noises. When the carpet installers finally finished, we were still faced with the fact that the entire contents of our Master bedroom room had to be moved out of everyone else's rooms so we could all get to our beds. It was a bit of a nightmare with all the heavy lifters still under the weather, but somehow we survived the day and got enough of it done to go to bed.
As a side note, hubby and our two oldest sons did muster up the strength to go check out the new carpet padding before the carpet was covering it. We purchased the StepAhead with Nike Grind padding that reuses old sneakers. I couldn't resist going with this more green padding option considering the amount of sneakers our household alone has retired. And after looking at their website, I found out I can even drop off old sneaks to be used in this process at locations including the Nike Outlet in our area.
While Facebook lit up on Valentine's day with romantic sentiments and sweet romantic gestures and Pinterest was overflowing with all things of the heart, my life was keeping my day real. Our intentions were to make Valentine's Day a simple one after having a very busy weekend and an unplanned for Sunday night flu outbreak that kept half the household home on Monday.

Here's where I need to stop babbling about going green on a red day and return you back to my real life Valentine's Day ...
Valentine's Day began with a shuffle to find red, white, or pink clothes. Down to the dreary laundry room I go. If cupid were replaced by the laundry fairy, I wouldn't mind one bit! At least everyone was heading back to school and work. Our oldest son, a captain of his high school's track team, was even going to try running again after sitting out a few weeks with quad injury. After school, the kids were in and out with me for activity practices, so Hubby picked up dinner. Hubby even brought me my favorite chocolates, though he had me at "I could pick up dinner".
To be honest, the day sort of tanked from there with our oldest son coming home with a doctor's referral from the school's trainer after a failed attempt at running on what should now be a healed injury. Looks like he'll need to head to physical therapy. (Poor Guy.) It got worse from there when a sweet gift from one of my brothers, more candy and flowers, turned into what we assume to be an allergic reaction by one of the twins. Looks like he's off to the doctor for tests. (Poor Kid.) I could go on, but I think you are sensing the overall theme.
The holiday filled with romantic notions and hearts was unable trump the day-to-day reality that is being a mom, and that's ok because I rather love being a mom. And you know what? I bet behind those other Facebook statuses showing cards, flowers, jewelry, heart shaped pancakes, and candy there was some downright mundane parts mingled into their days too. That's the real Valentine's Day of virtually any Mom. As I see it, it's just another ordinary day with extra love filled heart-shaped sprinkles on top.
